The source for the tools built within the PhD will use a GNU AFFERO GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE, this is an ethical choice to provide the community with the code so new instances of the tools can be freely used within other organisations and also allows a team of contributors to support the building of the tools. I am not a computer science graduate and the aim of these tools is to test ideas around extending the community of practice . This will also engage the project with a wider public audience. As the Open Education Consortium says:
sharing is probably the most basic characteristic of education: education is sharing knowledge, insights and information with others, upon which new knowledge, skills, ideas and understanding can be built.
The manifesto will dictate all tools created should be open source.
The word “free” in our name does not refer to price; it refers to freedom. First, the freedom to copy a program and redistribute it to your neighbours, so that they can use it as well as you. Second, the freedom to change a program, so that you can control it instead of it controlling you; for this, the source code must be made available to you. (Stallman, 1986)
